Commonly asked questions

What can I expect from the day?
Lots of fun!  The day is packed full of information, as well as practical hands on experience.   You will get a lot of handouts including all the recipes for the day.
You will learn a lot and my goal is that it will help you make better choices in your own home, which will in turn improves your health and the health of your family.

Do I need to bring anything?
Just a pen!

What do I wear?
I have aprons here for you to use, so just wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Do the classes run to time?
We will have a timetable for the day, which we will endeavor to stick too.  Classes start at 9:30am unless otherwise stated and we start the clean up at 2pm with a 2:30pm finish, those that need to leave to collect school children can leave on time.

Are the recipes practical?
I own three businesses & have two young children, yes they are practical!
My philosophy is not to spend your life in the kitchen, but spend adequate time in the kitchen.
Once we spent hours preparing the evening meal, now we spend an average of half an hour.  That is expected to shorten to an average of 15 mins a meal within the next few years.  Which is great news for the fast food restaurants & pre-packaged food suppliers, but bad news for our health!  I spend a few hours during the week in the kitchen.  The average meal preparation you will learn is half an hour.

Does it cost more to eat healthy food?
NO!  This is the biggest excuse I hear!!!!  It does not cost more to eat healthy food, in fact it can cost less.  Some healthy foods & specialty foods can cost more, however if you take the time to make your own then it can be a really economical way of living.
In reality there are more expensive foods, but that's true in all styles of eating.  You don’t have to eat them everyday & you can fit a healthy diet into ANY budget.
Ask yourself what it’s costing you eat in an unhealthy manner?  Health?  Energy? Does it compromise your children’s education? (Eating high sugar breakfast cereals disguised as a ‘health food’ because the company adds a small amount of calcium, causes your child’s blood sugar levels to CRASH before they even hit the classroom.  Your child cannot concentrate!

How many people are there in each class?
There is a minimum of 8 and a maximum number of 14.
Our venue has a beautiful large kitchen to work in, compete with a well equipped scullery.

My family eats a pretty standard kiwi diet, but we know we could do better.  Will my family actually like the food I will learn to cook?
Of course!   As a self proclaimed ‘foodie’ everything I cook HAS to tantalise my taste buds!  If your family is used to a very plain, meat & boiled vege diet, my classes will encourage you to go beyond your comfort zone, but I won’t teaching you to boil up buckets of seaweed & chant over your herb garden at full moon either!

Do you teach classes in the city?
No I don't as our school venue here is well set up and well worth the extra 40 mins drive from the city.  Classes here run smoothly and efficiently and students love the experience of being here.

Do you offer an online course?
An online course is on it's way!  By the end of November 2008 we'll have the school converted to downloadable video clips, you can join a weekly online lesson including a weekly plan to overhaul your kitchen and diet and lifestyle and join the blog with others who are doing it aswell!
